About AM2K

A Publication of Some Kind

AM2K began in the late 1990s, shortly after I graduated from journalism school and immediately put that education to use making a photocopied 'zine.

At the time, independent publications were everywhere, the approaching millennium had placed “2000” at the end of nearly every available title, and desktop publishing had made it possible for one person to become an entire media organization without acquiring either an organization or much media.

Andy Meyer 2000 was born into that favorable environment.

The early issues covered the important subjects of the day: popular culture, social events, questionable trends, personal recommendations, and whatever else seemed capable of filling the remaining space on a page. It had departments. It had features. It occasionally had access to a working photocopier.

Building the Internet

In 2001, AM2K moved online.

This was during the period when websites were assembled from tables, spacer images, and unreasonable confidence. Pages were narrow, navigation was experimental, and every site contained at least one design decision that could now trigger a medical response.

AM2K fit right in.

The website expanded on the original publication with regular updates, photographs, advice from General Zod, Pit Fights, and ongoing coverage of subjects overlooked by larger and more responsible media outlets. It continued for roughly five years before entering what can now be described as an extended publishing hiatus.

It was not called that at the time.

“Ongoing coverage of subjects overlooked by larger and more responsible media outlets.”

The All-New, All-Different AM2K

In 2026, AM2K returned — not as a faithful recreation of an early-2000s website, because nobody deserves that, but as a continuation of the same publication.

The Archive preserves what can be recovered from the original run. Old photographs and features will return as they're found, identified, and cleared for public consumption. New material joins the same timeline rather than being separated into a more respectable modern wing.

The editorial scope remains deliberately broad. AM2K covers pop culture, advice, competitions, historical documents, unexplained artifacts, and anything else that can withstand several paragraphs of unnecessary examination.

There are no accounts, subscriptions, notifications, or plans to become a platform. AM2K is simply publishing again, at a pace consistent with its previous twenty-year production schedule.
